Happy Hobbit Day (one day early)!

As summer draws to a close, many of us lament the end of warm evenings spent barbecuing and impromptu trips to the beach.  But for those who love the crisp air of autumn, there are plenty of reasons to be excited for this time of year.

Namely, that the first day of fall corresponds with International Hobbit Day!

Born on September 22nd of separate years, tomorrow marks the fictional birthdays of Bilbo and Frodo Baggins, which makes it quite the pre-eminent geek holiday.  Similar to raising a glass for Tolkien's Birthday Toast, the traditional celebration for Hobbit Day is to indulge in Second Breakfasts (and elevensies, to say nothing of brunch and afternoon tea) and live the hobbit lifestyle for a day in honor of Bilbo and Frodo.

This year's Hobbit Day celebration is particularly noteworthy, as it commemorates the 75th anniversary of the book's publication, and so all sorts of organized parties are being thrown by Tolkien societies across the globe.

Also making this year's Hobbit Day special is the release of not one, but two trailers for the upcoming film.  The first of which was posted on Kawaiian Punch's Facebook page earlier this week and is the official, extended trailer for Peter Jackson's An Unexpected Journey.

The second trailer is for a separate version of The Hobbit entirely.  Filmed by a group of ~70 British pre-adolescents on a shoestring budget, the trailer for the full 90 minute film is quite impressive in a retro, BBC sort of way.

Happy Hobbit Day to one and all!  If anyone needs me, I'll be at the local 24 hour IHOP...
