Avril Lavigne covers Nickleback song... for the upcoming One Piece anime movie?

It's no secret that once upon a time, I had something of a thing for Avril Lavigne. After a mountain of unreturned fan mail and our respective marriages, I decided that it was probably best that I cut her loose so that she could follow her own dreams.

As it turns out, those dreams included divorcing that guy from Sum 41 and getting engaged to Chad Kroeger, the lead singer of Nickleback. It's not exactly what I saw for her, but such are the vicissitudes of life.

No one would have guessed that Avril's engagement to Kroeger would kick off a bizarre series of events that would eventually culminate with her recording not one but two theme songs for the upcoming One Piece movie One Piece Film Z.

As odd as the fit may sound, Lavigne is no stranger to manga and anime

Shortly before their engagement, the amateur Japanophile Lavigne covered one of Nickleback's most popular (and insufferable...) songs, How You Remind Me.  Eiichiro Oda, the creator of the wildly successful One Piece manga and executive producer for One Piece Film Z heard the cover and was so impressed that he sent Lavigne a personal letter asking for permission to use the song in the movie.

Correspondance between Oda and Lavigne's respective camps continued, and eventually Lavigne's cover of Joan Jett's Bad Reputation (a personal favorite song of Oda's) made its way into the film as well.  Both will be used as main themes for the film.

Reaction to the news from the One Piece community has been mixed.  While Lavigne will re-record both covers for the film, a previous recording of Bad Reputation gives you an idea of what you can expect to hear from one of One Piece Film Z's theme songs...

At this point, it's probably safest to say "Well, Oda asked for it and it is his story..." and move along. It's not like this decision will scuttle the pirate anime's 15-year-and-counting run, right?
