The most intense pumpkin carving that you'll see today

I'm taking a break from the Hobbit news feed that this site is rapidly turning into to remember that Halloween is just five short days away.

The upcoming 'Frankenstorm' has pretty much made the delay of Halloween an inevitability here in the Northeast, which is why it's important to soak up as much of the holiday spirit as possible before hand.

The legendary pumpkin carver Ray Villafane is all too happy to help New York get in the mood for Halloween with an incredible display at The New York Botanical Gardens.  Villafane and his studio carved a bunch of gourds this year with the largest weighing close to a solid ton (1,872 pounds).  The end result is as impressive as it is zombie-tastic.

He was going to use a heavier pumpkin but it apparently "spring a leak".  Pity the poor assistant who had to clean that deluge of pumpkin guts up...

Tickets to the NY Botanical Garden's "Haunted Pumpkin Garden" are $20 for adults, but are well worth it for the chance to see Villafane's walking zombie pumpkin display in the orange-tinted flesh.
