Watch that chick from The Wonder Years light Tasmanian Devils on fire

Back in 2004, the Syfy channel stumbled upon small screen gold with its amazing reboot of Battlestar Galactica.  The series critiqued then-current social issues like racism and xenophobic paranoia and presented them in a fantasy world populated by believable characters that the audience could relate to.

In short, it was everything that good science-fiction should be.

Ever since BSG, however, it appears that Syfy has decided to stop trying so hard. Instead of attempting to recreate the spark of Battlestar, the network instead focused on churning out cult b-movies that have a well-deserved reputation for being fairly terrible.

A trailer for the latest of these Syfy original movies - Tasmanian Devils - has just hit the web, and it actually looks... well, fairly terrible, really.

That aside, the so-bad-it's-still-bad-but-almost-kinda-good movie stars the former childhood hearthrob and mathematical wunderkind Danica McKeller (aka Winnie Cooper) and will no doubt join the ranks of other Syfy masterpieces like FrankenfishDinocroc vs. SupergatorRage of the Yeti, and Piranhaconda.

Fair warning, the trailer's pretty graphic in terms of blood and gore... but it also has Winnie Cooper going absolutely fucking crazy on some marsupials with a flamethrower:

Joining McKellar on this cinematic outing is Battlestar Galactica's Rekha Sharma (Tory) and Olympic speed skating gold medalist Apolo Ohno.  There's a chance that Tasmanian Devils might actually be good, so let's hear what McKeller's character has to say about the evil beasties in this movie:

"...thousands of years ago, the Aboriginal ancestors would call upon this... devil... to defend their island against their enemies.  It is a fiery beast, born from the earth that can devour its human prey... whole."

Well, I'm out.  But if you have nothing better to do with your time this weekend, Tasmanian Devils premiere this Saturday - January 19th - at 9pm EST.
