George R.R. Martin signs on to develop new series for HBO

If you've been waiting patiently for George R.R. Martin to finish the last two books of the A song of Ice and Fire series, you may want to find a calm, happy place before reading any further.

Deadline.com reports that Martin has signed on to "develop and produce" new series projects HBO in addition to continuing on as the co-executive producer for Game of Thrones. If you're worried that this might not leave him enough time to finish the 6th and 7th books that the series was based on... well, you might be onto something there.

Despite posting a new chapter for book six of the series (The Winds of Winter) it looks like Martin is dangerously close to pulling a full-on Robert Jordan here.  In fact, Martin is already five years older than Jordan was when he died, so time is not exactly something Martin should be mucking around with.

Misgivings of future publications aside, it'll be interesting to see what Martin and HBO come up with for this/these new series.  Martin's background is in television production and writing, as he originally penned many of the better episodes for the 1980s Beauty and the Beast and he has a few other writing projects out there rip for HBO-ification.

Still, it'd be nice for him to work on those after he finishes up the damn series that catapulted him to superstardom first.  Write faster, dammit! Write like the wind!
