Vocaloid fans in the west are about to face a potential watershed moment, as Crypton Media announced that Hatsune Miku's long-delayed English voicebank will see a release later this summer.
Technically, this isn't anything we didn't already know - since they've hinted that summer would be the release date for some time now - but there's an official website set up for the English voicebank (mikuenglish.com) where you can sign up for email notifications about the progress of the English version of Miku.
On more than one occasion, Sega's said that Miku is "just on the tipping point" of going over in the west, and it seems likely that the English release of her voicebank will push her in one direction or another.
It's unlikely that she'll ever cross over into mainstream pop culture, but if that should come to pass we can all sit back and bear witness to the handwringing and frustration of Vocaloid hipsters who snap their Pocky in rage every time a 'tweeybopper talks about this really cool anime singer they've just discovered.
But maybe I'm being unduly cynical. Perhaps the western release of Miku's English voicebank will unite fans new and old.
Only time, and the quality of her English phonemes, will tell.
