Christmas came early to Final Fantasy fans this summer when an incredible new project called Final Fantasy: Terra made its way to Facebook. As a fan film based on one of the greatest video games ever made Terra looked amazing from the outset, but it was - at the time - simply an idea without a proof of concept.
That proof of concept arrived late last night, when director Ben Pohl posted the long-awaited trailer for the fan film on Final Fantasy: Terra's Facebook page.
In an exclusive interview with your pal here at Kawaiian Punch, Pohl told fans that the trailer was the first step in bringing the finished movie to light and he hoped that fans would be 'pleasantly surprised' by it.
Considering that Pohl's company paid for the entire trailer (casting, effects, etc.) out of pocket, I'd say 'pleasantly surprised' would be an understatement.
There are a few rough edges here and there, but as a proof of concept the trailer shows what Bad Pixel has in mind for the film.
Everything from Edgar's Autocrossbow to the tongue-in-cheek nod to the original battle screens will jog your nostalgia, while the innovative CG for things like the Magitek Armor and spell effects will whet your appetite for what Final Fantasy: Terra could become with proper funding.
Yet despite the few rough edges, or perhaps because of them, the trailer stands out as an impressive undertaking. It's a labor of love that's capable of being something really magical - especially as Final Fantasy VI's (dear god) 20th anniversary approaches next year.
Incidentally, I still think the casting's a bit young on the whole - but any doubts I had on the acting chops of the group were silenced by Kefka's so-creepy-it's-awesome smile and Terra's perfectly emotive expressions.
Here's to hoping Bad Pixel can get the rights for a Kickstarter - the world could use more movies like this.
