Edit on 11/27/13: A new Facebook post from the game's creator has appeared, and says that he's "one step closer to resuming production" thus giving more indication that this will actually happen. The original post follows.
After yesterday's disheartening - if not entirely surprising - news, there's a faint glimmer of hope from another Final Fantasy fan project the Final Fantasy XI Fanmade RPG.
For those not familiar, FFXI Fanmade RPG is an ambitious project that aims to take the massive, multiplayer world of Square Enix's first MMORPG Final Fantasy XI and turn it into a singleplayer, 16-bit RPG.
It sprang into existence back in February has been silent since May when the creator posted his last update to the project. Some fans being who and what they are didn't stop to appreciate that he might have more going on in his life than this side project and so they began leaving polite, and not so polite, inquiries as to what the hell was going on with the game.
Following five months of complete silence on the matter, Final Fantasy XI Fanmade RPG's creator once again took to his Facebook page with an update that's equal parts encouraging and disappointing.
"Regret to inform people that the computer i was using crashed and completely stopped working, i was able to save the hard drive and the game itself, but any production is delayed until i aquire [sic] a new computer. (Thus all the delays)"
So, the bad news is that the game's delayed and probably will be for awhile. The good news, however, is that the game's been salvaged and is still - assumedly - going to see the light of day sometime.
What's most interesting about the situation is the vitriol that some of the fans of the game directed toward the game's creator during his absences. While some simply asked for news and updates, others took a somewhat less gentle course with comments like the following:
It would be a lot easier for you to simply deactivate this page if you're no longer going to work on this. You know rather than having everyone waiting for an update.
It's easy to feel passionate about a game and look forward to its release, certainly, but it's also important to remember that the person making the game (in this case, assumedly, not for profit) is a human being and has other competing concerns for their time and attention.
Hopefully Final Fantasy XI Fanmade RPG will be saved from the ashes of the fallen hard drive and turned into a playable game sometime soon.
If not, well, we'll always have the screenshots...
