Christmas has come early for fans of boffer weapon comedies and Tyrion Lannister.
That's right, the much-anticipated Knights of Badassdom finally has a release date of sorts. According to its tempestuous Facebook page, the LARP-centric comedy will screen in select cities on January 21 and will see widespread distribution on February 11.
The release marks the end of a long and bizarre post-production cycle that included clandestine emails and conspiracy theories, years of distribution rights wrangling, and the same trailer being released on at least three separate occasions.
Still, if you can get over all of that and the fact that it will probably air in a heavily-edited state, there's plenty to like about Knights of Badassdom.
To start with, its cast includes Peter Dinkelage (Tyrion Lannister, Game of Thrones), Summer Glau (River Tam, Firefly), Ryan Kwanten (Jason Stackhouse, True Blood), Danny Pudi (Abed, Community), and W. Earl Brown (Dan Dohrety, Deadwood)... all of whom take to the august field of LARPing to combat a succubus that one of them summons by mistake while trying to cast an in-game spell.
Also, Battlestar Galactica composer Bear McCreary's handling the music... or, at least he was before all the in-fighting began.
So, there you have it - faithful LARP comedy fan. After almost three years of post-production, Knights of Badassdom will follow other LARP comedies like Unicorn City and Lloyd the Conqueror into limited release before digital distribution.
I wouldn't hold my breath for this being a blockbuster based on the ignominy of the release, and the complete omission of Danny Pudi from the new trailer is a little worrying, but hey - a new LARP movie that has Tyrion Lannister trippin' on shrooms is a new LARP movie that has Tyrion Lannister trippin' on shrooms.
