No mages need apply - next-gen RPG promises no magic or monsters

Most players come to RPGs expecting certain familiar trappings: experience points, a customizable job system, magic items, and plenty of monsters to grind on.

The upcoming open-world roleplaying game Kingdom Come: Deliverance, then, might disappoint a great many RPG fans as it proudly states that it'll feature no magic or monsters.  Instead, it will set its sweeping story in a historical time period - the 15th century Holy Roman Empire.

A comparison to 'Skyrim without magic and dragons' would be entirely fair to Deliverance, as it features both a non-linear story and first-person melee combat but it absolutely won't feature "high fantasy or mythical overtones".

It's difficult to predict what kind of market Kingdom Come: Deliverance will find given all of this.  

Failure seems like a probable outcome because - hey, who doesn't love playing a squishy mage now and then? - but  then, given the meteoric success of the relatively low-fantasy A Song of Ice and Fire / Game of Thrones, it could be argued that fantasy fans are looking for more history and less manticores in their source material.

Only time - and its eventual beta - will tell how well an RPG like Kingdom Come: Deliverance can fare on the market as it strips away almost everything sacred to the RPG genre.  I want to say I'm excited about it and what it represents, but on the other hand I do like murdering me some goblins with magic missiles.

Deliverance is due out for the PC, PS4, and Xbox One in 2015,  so there's a bit of a wait on it whether you welcome or dread its departures.
